TSA Removes All Invasive Airport X-Ray Scanning Technology

June 4, 2013 at 2:35 am Comments are Disabled

Provision_xrayIn what is a relief for air travelers, the Transportation Security Administration announced it has finished removing all the X-ray scanner technology from all airports in the US that produces those graphic and controversial images of passengers passing through airport security.

In a letter released Thursday, TSA administrator John Pistole tells the House Homeland Security committee that as of May 16, 2013, all airport scanners in the US equipped with the ability to produce the penetrating images will now only show a generic outline of a passenger. A colored box will pop up in the scanner screens if the full-body scanner detects a possible forbidden item.

The TSA had at least two weeks more to beat the deadline of modifying scanners to conform with passenger rights and complaints. The scanning technology was originally set to be modified by June 2012 under the Federal Aviation Administration’s Modernization and Reform Act of 2012.

The controversial scanners, which was first deployed by the TSA in 2008, sparked public criticisms as the technology, while being able to detect hidden contraband compared to traditional X-rays, also created images that appeared as if they were “virtual nudes.” Many people called this an invasion of privacy and questions were raised on whether the scanning devices truly lacks the ability to store the images, as the TSA claims.

Still A Man’s World: How Women Are Missing Out In The Job Market

May 14, 2013 at 1:56 am Comments are Disabled

Gender wageThe average woman still has to work harder to get pay equal to that of her male counterparts. This is what the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) found out after they analyzed the gender trend in the employment market. A woman misses out on $433,360 in salary over for 40 years, according to the NWLC’s April report. The NWLC further states women need to work for 12 more years just to close the difference between their incomes.

There are three reasons for this large gender gap, according to Katherine Gallagher Robbins, a senior policy analyst at NWLC. About 2/3 of minimum wage workers are women who work for less than $10.10 an hour. This problem is further exacerbated as women slowly lose out on the number of jobs in higher-paying industries.

Discrimination also plays a role as women with children are passed over for promotion. Children-less female coworkers get more opportunities in the workplace. These problems continue to rise, if fair policy is not created and implemented any time soon.
